PMO Basics
PMO is about doing the right projects at the right time with the right effort and governance to get the desired project outcomes which in the end ensures we get the desired business benefits.
For being able to ensure this, we need a set of guidelines, rule-sets and someone to guard all of this.
Processes
Project Portfolio Management is the main process in a PMO ensuring value for the business. Project Management is a sub-process and holds the Project Model(s) based on a common Framework such as e.g. PRINCE2, PMI, PPS and others or an internal own developed Project model and Framework.
PMO Roles
The roles in a PMO as well as in the projects must all in all ensure the success of the projects and the Project Portfolio.Having the right roles in a program, a project and even in the PMO governance i essential.
Governance
To ensure the right focus and mandate for the Project it is important that it has the right sponsorship within the organization. At least you should always know who is the Senior User, the Senior Supplier and the Sponsor in the project. If you cannot define this the project are likely to not be successful since there is no buy in from the right stakeholders.

Intake
If you have unlimited resources you can choose to do all projects at the same time but even in this case it’s not likely to be beneficial to do all projects at the same time.
That’s why you should have a well-defined procedure for selecting and starting up projects; Project Intake.
